Normandy Bound

Omaha Beach then and now.

As some of you may know, I am heading to England and France this week to explore the sites of the Normandy Invasion in 1944.  Joining fellow history professors and students, many from Shepherd University, I am embarking on a ten day adventure that will be taking us from London to Portsmouth.  From there, we will be sailing across the Channel to Dieppe, were we will learn of the disastrous British/American raid of August 1942.  There onward, it's a veritable history palooza of sites that you remember from The Longest Day and Band of Brothers: Pegasus Bridge, all Allied landing beaches, Pointe du Hoc, the American cemetery at Colleville, St. Mere Eglise, Brecourt Manor, Carentan, and finally . . . Paris!  As you can imagine, these excursions will be the subject of multiple blog posts upon my return.  Wish me luck.  Bon voyage!

  1. Unfortunately, the original Pegasus Bridge is not in place anymore. It was replaced by a new bridge in 1994. Although the original was restored and now resides in a museum at the Eastern edge of the new bridge. I would have loved to have seen it in its original place :)
